In March 2022, a reforestation and landscape restoration initiative in Enyezini, Malawi came to an end. A total of 500,000 trees (including indigenous forestry species, mango, orange, guava, apple and avocado trees) were planted throughout the duration of this project. In collaboration with House of Marley, One Tree Planted were able to make a real, lasting different to the community - here’s a little more about our work in Malawi.

In collaboration with House of Marley, One Tree Planted were able to make a real, lasting different to the community - here’s a little more about our work in Malawi.

Causes of deforestation in Malawi
The need of wood for construction, making bricks and tobacco curing, the production of charcoal and firewood for cooking.

Community benefits
Employment: This project has resulted in employment of community workers for nursery work, fencing, soil restoration activities, planting seedlings and watering.

Education: Supporting girls and their education by way of clothing, food, school fees, courses and counselling, this project helps young women by providing them with the tools they need to learn. Workers are also taught to grow their own seedlings and learn how to take care of planted trees.

Empowerment: The majority of paid workers were female.

Efficient cookstoves: In addition to the encouragement of tree planting, this project saw women learn how to build clay and brick rocket stoves to save firewood – not only to benefit them, but the forests and climate too.

Protection: The community was given support to preserve the protected forestry areas.

Family support: This project was estimated to support around 600 families.
